Florentine Historical Football
24 JuneĀ 2016
The calcio storico fiorentino is one of the oldest and most loved Florentine traditions.
It takes place every year in Piazza Santa Croce near the end of June. For the occasion, the piazza is turned into an authentic arena. Four teams compete. It is a manly āfootballā competition. In many ways, it is similar to American football. The teams represent four neighborhoods in the city. For the occasion they wear genuine historical uniforms. Just as in the past, the winning team of Calcio Storico is given, as a prize, a live heifer of the famous Chianina breed.
Calcio storico is thrilling and absolutely unique. It is loved by both Florentines and visitors alike. Every year there is a scramble for the limited amount of tickets on sale for the event.
